Derek Chauvin has just pleaded guilty to a federal civil rights suit.

This means that he will not have to go to trial in January.

Legal analysts theorize he pled guilty to avoid the possibility of life in prison.

Instead, prosecutors are arguing for a 25-year sentence.

This will be held at the same time as his 22 ½ year sentence for his murder conviction.

Chauvin was convicted of murdering George Floyd when he suffocated him with his knee during an arrest.

There is no possibility of parole when serving a federal sentence.

Chauvin is also expected to pay restitution, but that number has yet to be determined.

The three other officers in the arrest are still awaiting trial. They have all pleaded not guilty.
