On Monday, Dave Chappelle returned to his alma mater.

He graduated from the Duke Ellington School of Arts in 1991.

He was going to name the theater after himself.

However, on Friday, he revealed that he changed his mind.

It will now be called the “Theater of Artistic Freedom & Expression.”

Chappelle said the reason for the name change was due to his Netflix special “The Closer.”

He said that the backlash he received from students “sincerely hurt me.”

“I took a lot of cold shots in business… but that day, they hurt me,” Chappelle said.

The name change was met with cheers and a standing ovation.
