‘Candyman’ Director Nia DaCosta Makes History As The 1st Black, Female Director To Debut At #1

 Nia DaCosta

Not only is the 'Candyman' reboot number one at the box office, but Nia DaCosta is also the first blast female director to debut a film at number one!

The scary flick raked in over $22 million during its opening weekend, despite only being shown in under 4000 theatres due to strict COVID-19 safety guidelines.

'Candyman' is DaCosta's second feature-length film. She wrote and directed the 2018 film 'Little Woods,' which Tessa Thompson starred in.

Nia joins some accomplished women of color who have topped the box office. Ava Duvernay’s 'A Wrinkle In Time' and 'Selma' debuted at number two during their respective releases.

Gina Prince-Blythewood’s hit 'Love & Basketball' was also a success. Chloe Zhao had the honor of winning two Oscars in 2020 for 'Nomadland.' Still, DaCosta is the first to debut at #1.

Jordan Peele's Monkey Paw Productions took a chance on DaCosta, and the chance has finally paid off after the release was pushed back due to the pandemic.
