Amy Bauernschmidt just made history!

She is now the first woman to command a U.S. aircraft carrier.

She told CNN it’s “easily one of the most incredible jobs in the world.”

Amy will command the USS Abraham Lincoln, a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier.

Amy said she wasn’t aware that it was an option for her – and it almost wasn’t.

Congress didn’t allow women to serve on U.S. Navy combatant ships until 1993.

However, there is still a long way to go for women in the Navy.

CNN reported that only 20% of the Navy’s active duty of 342,000 personnel are women.

Further Navy data shows that only 13% of 3,075 officers are women.
