Former TIME’S UP CEO Lisa Borders‘ abrupt resignation from the organization this week has now been explained.
The organization confirmed a report this morning that Borders stepped down after sexual misconduct allegations surfaced against her son. The organization released a statement saying, “On Friday, Lisa Borders informed members of TIME’S UP leadership that sexual assault allegations had been made against her son in a private forum.”
The continued, “Within 24 hours, Lisa made the decision to resign as President and CEO of TIME’S UP and we agreed that it was the right decision for all parties involved. All of our actions were fully guided by our support for survivors.
TIME’S UP concluded by saying, “We respect the rights of all survivors to own their own stories. We strongly encourage anyone who has experienced sexual harassment, assault or related retaliation in the workplace or in trying to advance their careers to contact the TIME’S UP Legal Defense Fund for assistance.”
The reason for her resignation was first reported by the Los Angeles Times.
In announcing her resignation on Monday, Lisa Borders said, “As Time’s Up continues to grow, I am proud of the work I have done to shepherd its continued development. Unfortunately, it is with deep regret that I must resign from Time’s Up to address family concerns that require my singular focus. I appreciate the opportunity to support this mission and I hope my efforts will continue to resonate.”
According to the Times, a woman posted on her Facebook page alleging Borders’ 36-year-old son had been sexually inappropriate with her. The woman told the Times that Borders’ son touched her genitalia, kissed her neck and brushed his erect but clothed penis against her body during a “healing session.”
An attorney for Borders’ son denied the allegations.
