Suge Knight has reached a plea deal in his murder case that gives him a shot at eventually tasting freedom again, and we're told that was most important to the former record executive.

Sources close to the deal tell us an emergency meeting was called Thursday morning after the former honcho for Death Row Records told his legal team he "wanted to see the light of day again."

We're told the prosecution and defense were locked in negotiations all day, and a deal was put on the table for Knight to plea to a manslaughter charge and spend more than 20 years in prison. He'll also get credit for time served, which is a little over 3 years.

Thursday in court Knight took the deal and pleaded no contest to manslaughter in the 2015 death of Terry Carter. He will serve 28 years in prison.
