The man who invented the famous sponge living in a pineapple under the sea is dead at the age of 57-years-old.
Stephen Hillenburg died Monday after a battle with ALS. The creator of “SpongeBob SquarePants” revealed last year that he had been diagnosed with the disease.
In a statement, Nickelodeon said, “We are sad to share the news of the passing of Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants,” adding, “Today, we are observing a moment of silence to honor his life and work.”
Hillenburg was a former marine biology teacher with an affinity for art. After combining his two loves, he created SpongeBob, along with a multi-million dollar empire.
He leaves behind a wife, Kathy, and son, Clay.
