Scarlett Johansson is receiving criticism for being cast as a transgender man in her next film but she is not having any of it.
According to Deadline, ScarJo will play the role of massage parlor owner Dante “Tex” Gill in an upcoming film, "Rub & Tug." Gill was born Lois Jean Gill but identified as a man.
The backlash began when April Reign, who kicked off the #OscarsSoWhite campaign, tweeted about the casting, saying, "Scarlett Johansson received considerable backlash for Ghost in the Shell, when she played a whitewashed Asian character. The movie tanked. Undeterred, she has teamed up WITH THE SAME DIRECTOR to play a trans male character in Rub & Tug."
As Reign notes, ScarJo also took heat for that role from people who felt the part should have gone to an Asian actress.
But ScarJo is in no mood for the backlash this time around, issuing a statement to Bustle that simply says, "Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman's reps for comment."
Clearly, ScarJo is not playing around.
