‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Producers Head to Court to Stop Episodes from Leaking Online

The producers behind “RuPaul’s Drag Race” have gone to court to try and stop the unauthorized leaks of episodes of the current season.

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, World of Wonder Productions filed suit against John Does for copyright infringement.

The company explains the defendants — who they have yet to identify — have obtained copies of episodes of the “All-Stars” season, which is currently on the air and only on episode three.

They claim the unaired episodes have been uploaded to social media platforms including Instagram, Twitter and Reddit under the username “RealityTVLeaks.”

“Defendants brazenly tout their posts as ‘leaks’ and spoilers,” they alleged in the lawsuit. “Defendants have also removed copyright management information identifying WOW as the copyright owner and author of the Episodes, and added misleading copyright management information to the Episode clips they leak online, falsely identifying Defendants as the copyright owners and authors of the Episodes.”

The producers explain a key driver for “RuPaul’s Drag Race” viewership and revenue is the reveal in each episode of the elimination of a contestant. The unauthorized leak of their footage is “especially damaging” to World of Wonder because they occur prior to the airing of the episode.

World of Wonder says John Doe has refused to comply with their takedown demands and instead made their social media account private — which all seem to have been deleted — in an effort to evade WOW’s detection. The account has over 25,000 followers.

They are suing for an injunction against John Doe from continuing to leak their copyrighted material plus $150,000 in statutory damages for each violation.
