Robert Guillaume, who won two Emmys for playing Benson the butler, passed away on Tuesday. He was 89.

Guillaume died at home Tuesday in Los Angeles, his widow, Donna Brown Guillaume, told the Associated Press. The widow said Guillaume had been battling prostate cancer.

Guillaume starred on the 70s sitcom "Soap," and its spinoff, "Benson," winning an Emmy for each. He was also the first African-American to play the title role in "Phantom of the Opera," performing with an all-white cast in Los Angeles.

According to Variety, he is survived by his second wife, one son (another son passed away in 1990) and three daughters.
