Ralphie May‘s death came as a complete shock to the people who just awarded him “Casino Comedian of the Year,” because they were told he was feeling better after battling pneumonia.

A rep for the Casino Entertainment Awards tells The Blast May was supposed to attend the show on October 4 to receive his award after previously pulling out due to illness.  The rep was told May “was feeling better and would attend.”  When the winner’s name was read and it was Ralphie May’s, everyone waited for him to come forward, but he was not there.

We’re told when he did not show, presenter Robin Leach accepted the award on his behalf.

The execs for the awards show just learned of May’s passing, after receiving “a text from a friend and fellow comedian” in Las Vegas and hope that he “had received the news that he had won” the award before he died.

Luckily, Ralphie did know he won, and even tweeted his gratitude for the recognition.

As we previously reported, May was discovered Friday morning at a private residence in Las Vegas after suffering cardiac arrest.
