A new report alleges Mario Batali assaulted a woman in a special room of his popular restaurant and was known as the “Red Menace” by his employees.
A former manager from The Spotted Pig told the NY Times in 2008 Batali was caught on video kissing and groping a woman who “appeared to be unconscious.” The manager claims the celebrity chef assaulted the woman in a third-floor party spot in the restaurant dubbed “the rape room,” and that she intervened once she discovered what was going on.
The Times also spoke to a former female employee who claimed Batali tried to touch her breasts, and once told her to “sit on his friend’s face” while she was serving drinks to his table.
She says he was known as the “Red Menace.”
Batali has already lost business and endorsement deals in the wake of his scandal.
He’s also responded to the allegations, saying, “Though I don’t remember these specific accounts, there is no question I have behaved terribly,” adding, “There are no excuses. I take full responsibility and am deeply sorry for any pain, humiliation or discomfort I have caused.”
