Mariah Carey is on the cover of PEOPLE magazine this week opening up about mental health issues.
The Grammy winner revealed that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2001 and didn't want to accept the diagnosis. After grappling with the news, she's taken steps to care for herself and said she's currently in therapy and taking medication for bipolar II disorder.
“Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me,” she said in the exclusive interview. “It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love — writing songs and making music.”
Carey explained that she's in a great place right now which prompted her to reveal her struggle. The star said on Instagram that she's grateful to share her story.
The full interview hits newsstands on Friday.
