John Singleton, Director of 'Boyz N the Hood,' Dead at 51

By TheBlast Staff

John Singleton passed away on Monday, a little more than a week after he suffered a major stroke. He was 51.

The family announced his passing, saying, "John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends. We want to thank the amazing doctors at Cedars-Sinai Hospital for their expert care and kindness and we again want thank all of John’s fans, friends and colleagues for all of the love and support they showed him during this difficult time."

Earlier in the day, the decision was made to take the director off of life support. The family said of the decision, "It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off of life support today. This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors."

Singleton became the first African American to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director for the 1991 film, "Boyz N the Hood." He was the youngest person to ever be nominated for the award and was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay that year.

His other notable films included "Poetic Justice," "Higher Learning," "Shaft" and "2 Fast 2 Furious."

Singleton also directed the music video for Michael Jackson's "Remember the Time," which starred Eddie Murphy, Iman and Magic Johnson.

The director's mother triggered a battle within the family when she filed documents last week seeking to be named conservator over her son. Sheila Ward said that Singleton had "suffered a major stroke" and was "in a coma and is unable to provide for his personal needs."

Singleton's daughter Cleopatra painted a different picture. She objected to her grandmother being named conservator and said that her father was "not in a coma." She said he was “progressing every day” and was hoping he could be “out of the ICU in 5 days."

In her declaration, Cleopatra said she believes her grandmother should not be named conservator over Singleton’s estate and person. She claimed there was a conflict of interest (Ward is Singelton’s personal and business manager) and believed there should be different and separate conservators for each aspect of his life.

Cleopatra suggested her grandfather and brother.

She said Ward has "abused" her position as Singleton’s manager and has "stated she plans to liquidate his assets immediately and leave his children with nothing."
