John Mahoney – best known for playing Frasier and Niles Crane’s dad on “Frasier” – passed away on Sunday. He was 77.
A rep for the actor tells The Blast that he passed away in Chicago “after a short illness.”
Mahoney was nominated for two Golden Globes and two Emmys for his role as Martin Crane. He appeared on the show throughout its run from 1993 to 2004.
After “Frasier,” he appeared on the second season of the HBO show “In Treatment,” playing a CEO plagued by anxiety attacks.
He also had roles in “The American President,” “Barton Fink,” “Say Anything” and “She’s the One.”
Mahoney was notoriously private and never married.
It is with our deepest sorrow that we share the news that ensemble member of 39 years John Mahoney passed away. Tonight’s opening night performance of You Got Older has been cancelled. We are instead inviting all to gather in Front Bar this evening. All are welcome to join us. pic.twitter.com/k8yrrR7ICA
