Michael Jackson's Father, Joe Jackson, Dead at 89

By TheBlast Staff

Joe Jackson, the patriarch of the Jackson family, has died at the age of 89.

The Blast has confirmed that Jackson passed away on Wednesday after a battle with a terminal illness. In mid-June, it was reported that Jackson was suffering through the final stages of pancreatic cancer.

A cryptic social media post published on Jackson's Twitter account on June 24 prompted many to think the music manager had already died. Paris Jackson, his granddaughter and the daughter of the late Michael Jackson, took to Twitter to call out "whoever is in charge of this account [for] taking advantage of it. my grandfather did not tweet this."

Joe Jackson was the man behind one of the most famous and talented families in musical history. He started the group the Jackson 5 in the 1960s, featuring five of his sons. He would later go on to work with his three daughters as well, launching the career of Janet Jackson.

According to reports from some of the Jackson children, most notably Michael, Joseph ruled with an iron fist, often subjecting them to endless rehearsals and both physical and mental abuse. Jackson famously forced his children to call him "Joseph" in public.

Joe married his now-estranged wife and the mother of his ten children, Katherine, in 1949. Over the years, Katherine attempted to divorce Joe several times but ultimately remained married until his death. In her autobiography, she accused her husband of rampant infidelity during their marriage. Joe Jackson's youngest child, Joh'Vonnie, was born to Cheryl Terrell with whom Jackson had at a decades-long affair.

Over the years, the Jackson children reportedly mended their relationship with their father. Janet Jackson honored him recently during an acceptance speech for the Radio Disney Music Awards first-ever Impact Award. "My father, my incredible father drove me to be the best I can," the singer said from the stage.

Jackson was just shy of his 90th birthday which would have been July 26th.
