GLAAD Says Kevin Hart 'Missed a Real Opportunity' by Stepping Down as Oscars Host

By TheBlast Staff

GLAAD is disappointed that Kevin Hart stepped down as host of the Oscars, feeling he should have used the controversy to do some good.

"Kevin Hart shouldn’t have stepped down; he should have stepped up," GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement to The Blast.

She added, "Hart’s apology to LGBTQ people is an important step forward, but he missed a real opportunity to use his platform and the Oscars stage to build unity and awareness. We would still welcome that conversation with him."

Ellis concluded by saying, "The Academy has recently made significant strides in featuring diverse talent onstage and they should now double down on that commitment as they look for a new host."

The comedian took heat for his old homophobic tweets and then for his refusal to apologize for them.

He eventually gave in to the pressure and opted to remove himself from the Oscars hosting gig.
