Casey Affleck just saved the Academy Awards a ton of trouble and withdrew from engaging in one of the biggest traditions of Hollywood's fabled award show.
Affleck, who won Best Actor in 2017 for "Manchester By The Sea," was expected to present the award this year for Best Actress. After he won his Oscar last year, criticism immediately began to mount against Affleck over past allegations of sexual misconduct by two women.
Brie Larson, who presented Affleck with his award, did not applaud for the actor when he won and then commented later that her muted reaction "Speaks for itself."
There were rumors the producers of this year's award show were going to deviate from the normal cues of past winners presenting the awards, but with Affleck beating them to the punch he saved a possible PR fiasco for himself and the Academy.
In response to his withdrawal, the Academy said "We appreciate the decision to keep the focus on the show and the great work of this year."
