Winona Ryder Accuses Mel Gibson Of Being Homophobic, Asked Gay Man If He Would Get AIDS For Being Near Him

By Ryan Naumann

Winona Ryder is detailing an encounter with Mel Gibson in which he was not only extremely homophobic but joked about the holocaust at a dinner party.

The actress sat down for an interview with The Times UK to discuss a broad range of topics about her lengthy career. Winona spoke via FaceTime from her home in Los Angeles.

During the chat, Ryder started to talk about her project “The Plot Against America” which she was drawn to the role because of her Jewish religion. The project is based on the Philip Roth novel which takes place in an alternate history of America in the 1940’s.

She said, “Not religious, but I do identify. It’s a hard thing for me to talk about because I had family who died in the camps, so I’ve always been fascinated with that time.”

When asked if she has experienced antisemitism, “I have … in interesting ways. There are times when people have said, ‘Wait, you’re Jewish? But you’re so pretty!’ There was a movie that I was up for a long time ago, it was a period piece, and the studio head, who was Jewish, said I looked ‘too Jewish’ to be in a blue-blooded family.”

Ryder then recalled a dinner party she attended where Mel Gibson was present. She detailed an encounter with him, “We were at a crowded party with one of my good friends, and Mel Gibson was smoking a cigar, and we’re all talking and he said to my friend, who’s gay, ‘Oh wait, am I gonna get Aids?’ And then something came up about Jews, and he said, ‘You’re not an oven dodger, are you?’”

The actress claims Gibson attempted to apologize at a later date.

Back in 2006, Mel was famously arrested for DUI while driving in Malibu. During the conversation with officers, Mel angrily shouted, “Fucking Jews... the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world. Are you a Jew?”
