The man who set himself on fire at a park near the White House on Wednesday afternoon died from his injuries.
Authorities identified the man as Arnav Gupta, 33, who had been reported missing earlier in the day. The Montgomery County Police Department said at the time, “Police are concerned for Gupta’s physical and emotional welfare.”
The Parks Service said in a statement, “The Bethesda MD man identified as Arnav Gupta, died of his injuries later that evening. In accordance with policy, the investigation has been turned over to the Metropolitan Police Department.”

No motive for the incident is known at the time.
The incident occurred at 12:20 PM on the Ellipse near 15th Street and Constitution Avenue, according to the United States Secret Service. He was extinguished and then transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
