'Wheel of Fortune's' Vanna White Gives Update On Alex Trebek's Cancer Battle

By Jeff Mazzeo

"Wheel of Fortune" host Vanna White said her long-time friend Alex Trebek is "doing great" when she gave a promising update to US Weekly on Tuesday after being named the godmother of Carnival Cruise Lines’ Carnival Panorama.

White, who has been filling in for Pat Sajak while he is recovering from his recent surgery, told them that Trebek has a great attitude despite suffering complications from pancreatic cancer.

“He’s doing good. He really is,” the 62-year-old host said. “He looks good. I talked to him recently and he’s got a very positive attitude.”

White continued to sing the praises of the "Jeopardy!" host because he has been extremely motivated to raise awareness as he deals with the debilitating radiation treatment.

“I love that he’s honest and open with his fans, because he’s been doing the show for a very long time also and feels very connected to all of his fans and viewers,” she told US Weekly.

“He is definitely keeping everybody updated on how he’s doing, and I am so proud of him. He’s still working, he’s obviously doing chemotherapy but working through it, and has that strong will to, as we say, the show must go on.”

The long-time game show host announced his diagnosis of stage 4 pancreatic cancer in March with a video message directed to all his fans.

He promised to keep fighting and continue working but has said that he would stop if his skills diminished to a noticeable level. He returned to the show but announced in September that he required another round of chemotherapy during a "Good Morning America" appearance.

“I was doing so well. And my numbers went down to the equivalent of a normal human being who does not have pancreatic cancer," Trebek explained to the "GMA" audience.

He said, "we were all very optimistic," and the doctors stopped his chemotherapy and switched him to immunotherapy. "I lost about 12 pounds in a week. And my numbers went sky high, much higher than they were when I was first diagnosed. So, the doctors have decided that I have to undergo chemo again and that's what I'm doing."

Dr. Oz Praises the 'Jeopardy!' Host

The "Wheel of Fortune" host is not the only public figure praising Trebek for his awareness effort. Dr. Mehmet Oz went on "Fox and Friends" and explained how important Alex's announcement was. Dr. Oz loved that Trebek encouraged others to learn the "signs and symptoms."

“The bigger issue here is that folks, when they do get diagnosed, often don’t get aggressively treated," he said while talking about the PSA Alex did. "The only chance physicians can get ahead on this is by you telling us that you got these signs," Oz continued, "I'm hopeful we will find cures for some forms of pancreatic cancer."
