Netflix’s new “after show” episode of Tiger King hit the streaming service on Sunday, and while it did reveal what’s going on with many of the major players from the utterly wild docuseries, a few important people were missing. One was Joe Exotic’s current husband, Dillon Passage. However, Passage participated in a couple interviews where he updated Tiger King fanatics about Joe Exotic’s current state.
Exotic is currently serving a 22 year prison sentence, and so far Passage has not been able to visit him. However, Passage told Us Weekly that he’s looking forward to conjugal visits that should start “within the next month.”
“I know Jeff Lowe personally and I can’t speak highly of him, because there has not been one day or one thing he has done that made me think, ‘Oh that’s a good guy.’ Never once did I think that. I do know that the entire thing was orchestrated by Jeff.
The person who orchestrated it all was Jeff Lowe, because he was being stingy and wanted the zoo. That was no secret.
[Lowe] made that obvious very many times. Even in the docuseries, he says, ‘Some people may call it setting up, but I call it persuading.’ That just shows character right there or lack of.”
It might be a bit shocking to find out that Passage doesn’t “hold any resentment” towards Carole Baskin, however.
“I’ve never met Carole, so I can’t speak about how her personality is behind what was shown. I know that her and Joe just didn’t have a good relationship. He was in a dark place and she was constantly throwing lawsuits at him.”
Passage also opened up to People to explain what it was like dating Exotic at the beginning of their relationship.
“I never figured I’d marry Joe Exotic. I had no idea who he was. I never Googled him or anything.”
He explained that they were married on Dec. 11, 2017, just two months after Exotic’s previous husband Travis Maldonado died of an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound. From Passage’s retelling, Exotic was intense about the relationship from the get go.
“Joe had a long conversation with me whenever he proposed. He was like, ‘I need somebody who’s going to be here for me. You may not be in love with me right now, but you will be.’ I was in a bad place in my life and Joe really was helping me out and getting me healthy. And it was good to have somebody who I felt could take my loneliness away and bring me out of my depression and be there for me no matter what. And Joe made me feel like that.”
Passage claimed that his relationship with Joe really started in the shadow of Maldonado’s passing.
“Joe took Travis’ death very, very hard. Whenever he met me, he said that he felt like he had a reason to keep going. Everyone around the park was like, ‘You’re making him super happy. He needs you.’ “
As difficult as life is now that Exotic is in prison, Passage is still ride or die for his husband, saying that he’s still “100% in love” with him.
“It was like a companionship at first and then I just really saw his true colors and the kind person he was.Animals have always been a big deal in my life. When I was little, I’d always bring home any animal I could find. And I could see Joe’s heart that he was very in love and committed to his animals.
I’m not going anywhere. Joe was there for me in my darkest moments. I’m not going to just abandon him when he needs support more than anything.”
Are these two built to last?
