Selena Gomez had grown so ill before receiving a kidney transplant that she struggled to even open a water bottle, saying her "kidneys were just done."

Gomez sat down with Francia Raisa to talk about with the ordeal with Savannah Guthrie on Monday morning's episode of "Today."

"One day she came home and she was emotional. I hadn’t asked anything. I knew she hadn’t been feeling well," Raisa said. "She couldn’t open a water bottle one day. She chucked it and she started crying. And I said, 'What's wrong?' And that's when she told me.

Raisa continued, "And she goes, 'I don't know what to do. The list is seven to ten years long. It just vomited out of me: I was like, 'Of course I’ll get tested.'"

"The thought of asking someone to do that was really difficult for me," Gomez said. "She volunteered and did it. And let alone someone wanting to volunteer, it is incredibly difficult to find a match. The fact that she was a match, I mean that’s unbelievable. That’s not real."

Raisa went into surgery first, Gomez second. But as Gomez recovered, she realized something was wrong. Doctors said she had to go in for a second surgery as her new kidney was turning around inside her body.

“It was a six-hour surgery that they had to do on me," Gomez said, "and the normal kidney process is actually two hours.”

The pair talked about the difficult recovery process: everyday tasks were nearly impossible and they were on bed rest, only allowed to walk for an hour an day.

As The Blast first reported, Gomez had her entire family tested — and none were a match — before Raisa stepped up.
