Demi Moore wrote a wide ranging and vulnerable new memoir called Inside Out, detailing her difficult childhood, the highs and lows of her acting career, and her high profile marriages. She opened up about the difficulties she faced in her marriage to Ashton Kutcher and the sexual assault that she endured at the age of 15.
The Wall Street Journal asked Moore’s oldest daughter Rumer Willis about her mother’s book and the surprising details that she revealed. Willis explained that she was “privileged to see all sides of her mom.”
““I don’t know if I would use the word surprising. It’s more like…. When a whole picture of someone’s life is painted—it made so much sense, to see her whole childhood detailed. It was like having a bunch of puzzle pieces put together.”
She said that seeing her mom go through the process of writing the book and unearthing the truths of her life helped her realize that her mom was young once too.
“Whenever your parents say something like, ‘I was your age once and blah blah blah,’ when you’re younger you go, ‘Yeah, but you don’t really understand.’ It’s hard to imagine your parents as kids.”
Ultimately, Rumer is in her mom’s corner and is glad that she got to speak her truth to the world.
“I feel like I’ve had the privilege to see all sides of my mom. But I feel like one of the most beautiful parts of her writing this book is everyone who has been a fan of hers or who has loved her for so long will get to see all of those pieces, to see this vulnerable and very beautiful and sometimes intense side that they may not have seen before.”
