Roxette Singer Marie Fredriksson Has Died At 61

Marie Fredriksson, known for her vocals on hits like "It Must Have Been Love," "Listen To Your Heart," and "The Look," has died at the age of 61. The Roxette singer passed away on Monday after a 17-year battle with cancer, several outlets reported. Marie Fredriksson’s management company, Dimberg Jernberg Management, announced her death with a heartfelt message to fans. "It is with great sadness we have to announce that Marie Fredriksson of Roxette has passed away in the morning of December 9, following a 17-year long battle with cancer," the statement read.

Continuing the management company stated, "Marie leaves us a grand musical legacy. Her amazing voice – both strong and sensitive – and her magical live performances will be remembered by all of us who was lucky enough to witness them. But we also remember a wonderful person with a huge appetite for life, and woman with a very big heart who cared for everybody she met." Her Roxette bandmate, Per Gessle, also issued his own personal statement on his dear friend's passing.

“Time goes by so quickly. It’s not that long ago we spent days and nights in my tiny apartment in Halmstad, listening to music we loved, sharing impossible dreams. And what a dream we eventually got to share!" Per Gessle said. "Thank you, Marie, thanks for everything. You were an outstanding musician, a master of the voice, an amazing performer. Thanks for painting my black and white songs in the most beautiful colours. You were the most wonderful friend for over 40 years. I’m proud, honoured and happy to have been able to share so much of your time, talent, warmth, generosity and sense of humour. All my love goes out to you and your family. Things will never be the same."

Fredriksson and Gessle have a long history having worked together for several decades since debuting Roxette in 1986. The Sweedish musicians quickly rose to success with their debut album, Pearls of Passion, released that same year. Together, they share over 80 million records sold and International recognition. Marie Fredriksson was diagnosed with a severe brain tumor in 2002 and began aggressive treatment. She began touring again in 2009 and created several new albums. In 2016, the singer stopped touring due to doctor's orders. They wanted her to get off the stage and focus on her health. Their song "It Must Have Been Love," was created for Julia Roberts and Richard Gere 1990 box office hit, "Pretty Woman." Fans everywhere are mourning her loss with several taking to social media to express their sadness over the loss.

"Another music idol from my younger years past away. RIP Marie Fredriksson of Roxette...Thanks for all the songs that had been part of my life in the past. My heart goes out to her family & friends especially to Per Gessle, her bandmate," one fan wrote. "Sad news but she was strong for so many years. RIP Marie!" stated another. "It must have been love but its over now.... she was my mother’s age I didn’t know all along. May she rest in peace. Music is life," a third stated. Marie Fredriksson leaves behind her husband, Mikael Bolyos, and her two children Josefin and Oscar.
