R. Kelly suffered another setback in his criminal case with a judge denying his motion for release.
According to court documents obtained by The Blast, a federal court judge was not persuaded by Kelly’s various arguments for letting him out on bond.
As The Blast previously reported, Kelly has been working overtime in the past couple of weeks. He has repeatedly filed motions asking the court to consider the current health crisis. He argued he was in danger while locked up at MCC Chicago.
At one point, Kelly proposed he be allowed to move into an apartment with his girlfriend, Joycelyn Savage. He failed to mention the apartment was in the middle of an outdoor mall, which could have been a problem given the accusations he faces.
Prosecutors demanded Kelly be shut down saying he was a flight risk and danger to society. They fear he could devise a plan to get out of the country and avoid prosecution.
After a judge denied his first motion, Kelly filed an amended motion with new bullet points. In the docs, the disgraced singer said he was too famous to flee the county. He claimed he is super broke and without resources. Kelly brought up a $1.8 million tax debt in court.
Prosecutors previously accused Kelly of hiding hundreds of thousands in royalties. They believe he diverted his income to a childhood friend’s bank account.
In the newly filed court order, the judge agrees the conditions in the prison are not ideal. However, he says Kelly is not “uniquely at risk for contracting severe illness.”
Further, “The defendant continues to downplay the risk that he might flee, citing his attendance record in connection with the 2002 state criminal charges against him.”
The judge shut down Kelly’s attempts to portray himself as someone unlikely to flee. He noted, “Of course, the defendant is now charged with tampering with the witnesses in that case. In any event, his attendance record from a decades-old proceeding provides insufficient assurance that he would not attempt to flee if he were released. His circumstances and incentives are vastly different; he is now facing serious charges in multiple federal and state jurisdictions.”
While Kelly remains behind bars his ex-girlfriend, Azriel Clary, continues to live her best life.
