Ben Stiller, Winona Rider, Janeane Garofalo and Ethan Hawke got together to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their classic film, “Reality Bites,” and the ageless Lisa Loeb crashed the film and performed during the credits.
The cast — along with screenwriter Helen Childress and producers Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher — was on a panel at the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday afternoon. The movie screened before the cast took the stage and as the credits rolled, Loeb came out with her guitar and performed “Stay,” her biggest hit, which was featured on the film’s soundtrack.
The film was Stiller’s directorial debut, who jokingly told the crowd, “I just want to maybe apologize for the way the film fetishizes smoking … It’s out of control the amount of close-ups of cigarettes and cigarettes going into mouths.”
Hawke credited the movie, and specifically Ryder, for helping launch his career. He said, “I’m indebted. Winona believed in me. Winona got me this job. This job changed the trajectory of my career entirely … I’m just so grateful to you, Winona.”
Stiller thanked the crowd at the end, telling them, “It’s emotional for me, to hear the movie with an audience, to hear your reactions, to feel it together and to still be here 25 years later.”
