A Florida police officer is a hero today after he aided a dog he watched get hit by a car.
The Pinellas Park Police Department posted the story to their Facebook page, saying that Officer Puglia was heading in to work on Sept. 23 when he saw the dog get hit by a car as it was crossing I-275.
Puglia sprang into action, used his car to block traffic, covered up the dog and brought him to the Pinellas Animal Hospital.
The officer was worried at first, because he wasn’t sure if the dog was still alive after he was hit.
According to WFTS,
“My heart really sank until I started seeing him breathing.”
“I came back [in the SUV] and got an emergency blanket to wrap the dog in, because I didn’t want to hurt him any further.”
The department’s Facebook page adds that the dog, dubbed “Lucky,” will make a full recovery.
Lucky is now at Pinellas County Animal Services. The dog was found without a tag or a microchip, so the owner is still unknown.
The department’s page adds: “This incident is just another example of the dedication and compassion our officers have for our four legged friends. Great job to Ofc. Puglia.”
