Nicki Minaj’s husband Kenneth Petty was arrested for failing to register as a sex offender since moving to California. Petty was taken into custody by U.S. Marshalls after he turned himself in to the federal authorities.
Petty is registered as a sex offender in New York State, but failed to do so after he moved. He was originally arrested by the Beverly Hills Police Department in November 2019 after it was discovered that he was an unregistered sex offender while at a traffic stop. At the time, he was released on $20,000 bail.
“He is required to submit to electronic monitoring and his travel was restricted to Southern California.”
Petty’s status conference will occur on March 23 in order to figure out a path forward to the trial on April 28.
Petty was convicted in 1995 for the attempted first-degree rape of a 16-year-old girl. There was also an incident in 1994 when he was 16.
Petty previously served four years in a New York State prison for his 1995 crime, and he faces up to 10 years in prison if he’s convicted with this recent federal charge. Not only does Petty have to register as a sex offender, but he also has manslaughter charges on his rap sheet.
While Petty wasn’t placed on house arrest ahead of his trial, he does have to wear an ankle monitor and adhere to a curfew. He will be under “pretrial supervision” and surrendered his passport today. He must also abstain from any drug use, including marijuana from a legal dispensary.
Minaj has gotten defensive about her relationship with Petty before, seemingly focused on the fact that he wasn’t famous while ignoring the criticism that he is a sex offender. She wrote on Instagram last summer:
“When a person is with a n—a that loved them before they had a dime in their pocket? How do you not understand that? How do you not understand happiness vs. clout? How f–king dare you talk about lowering standards.
It’s the truth, money cannot buy me happiness and good sex.”
