Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh recently drew bipartisan criticism for his rebuke of Democratic Presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg and questioned whether or not America was ready for a gay President. Mayor Pete has certainly made no secret of his sexual orientation or his marriage to school teacher Chasten Glezman. To the contrary, Buttigieg affectionately embraces Chasten in front of audiences and television cameras alike. But rather than negatively impact his campaign, Mayor Pete continues to make history as he surges up the polls with seemingly unstoppable momentum in his run for the White House. Currently, he is enjoying unprecedented approval ratings while serving in that position. Johanna Siguroardottir is an Icelandic politician who served as that country's Prime Minister from 2009-2013. Well before that, she married her first wife in 1970 and, after they divorced in 1987, she entered into a civil union with another woman. Both Varadkar and Siguroardottir can regularly be seen with their partners at state functions.

Then, in 2013, she became the first to be elected to the United States Senate. In 2012, longtime Massachusetts congressman Barney Frank became the first American politician to wed his partner. At present, several openly gay men and women serve in both houses, such as Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema, New York Congressman Sean Maloney and Kansas congresswoman Sharice Davids.

And in 2014, college football star Michael Sam made history as the first openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL team when the St. Louis Rams chose him in the seventh round.
