His Love Knows No Bounds

Tom Hanks, who plays the iconic children's television host and all-around good guy Mister Rogers in the upcoming film "It's a Beautiful Day In the Neighborhood," says Mister Rogers has actually helped his marriage with Rita Wilson.

"Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" spent decades on public television, and through puppetry and interviews with real-life people, the famous host taught kids that it was okay to express their feelings and to be exactly who they want to be, regardless of what anyone else thinks.

Hanks and 'Neighborhood' co-star Matthew Rhys spoke with "Entertainment Tonight" about the movie. Hanks says Rogers' many lessons help his marriage with Wilson when they need it most.

"When my wife and I are going at it on those rare occasions, when she is letting me know that I'm not really listening to her and I'm trying to establish what the ground rules are [for the argument], when we're going at it like that, one of us will say, 'Well, you know what? You know what, honey? It's good to talk. It's good to say the things we feel,' and I learned that from Mister Rogers."

A Hero For All Kids

Hanks is referring to one of Rogers' many memorable sayings, which children, who grew up in the '60s, '70s and '80s, took with them as they got older.

"Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" is famous for being one of the most beloved children's shows on public television.

Wilson and Hanks Have Been Together Forever

Hanks says he and Wilson, who married in 1988 and have spent 31 happy years together, spend time together on simple hobbies, like making soup.

"We make soup together. Like, if we have a day off and there's nothing going on... it takes about two to three hours."

In discussing Hanks' role as Rogers, the beloved actor says he's just not like Rogers, although fans would disagree.

"I'm nothing like Fred Rogers in any way, shape, or form. Except, I think, I wake up in the morning thinking, 'Hey, it's a nice day, it's a good day. Let's try to make it a little bit better.' "

Bring Some Hankies

Hanks also says the two are similar in at least one way:

"I don't allow anyone to take advantage of my good nature and I don't know that Fred did either."

The much anticipated "A Beautiful Day In the Neighborhood" arrives in theaters on Friday, Nov. 22. Better make sure to bring your tissues, because Tom Hanks as Mister Rogers will most likely start up the waterworks.
