When Miley Cyrus‘ 2019 song “Slide Away,” was released soon after her split from Liam Hemsworth was announced, fans were puzzled.
The timing of the song, which is partly about saying goodbye to the things that both of them loved, including each other, couldn’t be better (or worse, depending on how you look at it).
Cheatsheet runs down their complex time together: They first started their relationship on the set of the movie The Last Song, when Cyrus was just 17.
The relationship was a bit topsy-turvy for several years, until they got engaged in 2012. One year later, the engagement was off, though they got back together a couple of years after that.
They finally married in December, 2018, in a very private family ceremony. But in August, 2019, they announced their separation.
Days after Hemsworth filed for divorce from Cyrus, she had released the song “Slide Away,” and also performed the song at the MTV Video Music Awards. Fans were simply putting two and two together, or so they thought.
They were mostly right. Some of the lyrics to “Slide Away” reference when she and Hemsworth first met, and she acknowledges that she’s changed since then.
“Move on, we’re not seventeen/I’m not who I used to be/You say that everything changed/You’re right, we’re grown now.”
Cyrus says “Slide Away” was created long before her marriage to Hemsworth crumbled. It sounds like on some level, she knew the relationship was going to end some day.
“I wrote ‘Slide Away’ before my breakup [with Hemsworth]. I wrote ‘Slide Away’ in February of the year before. I just keep speaking these things into existence. I’ve decided to use my language to love myself and to really create what I want to be my reality. Because otherwise, I keep doing the opposite.”
But Cyrus also says the lyrics in “Slide Away” inspired lyrics for her new song “Midnight Sky.” She says she thought: “I’ve got to scratch everything and write this. This is the foundation on which I feel like I can lay my story on top of that.”
Cyrus explained further how “Slide Away” bled into the lyrics for “Midnight Sky”:
“That’s why I wrote in ‘Midnight Sky’: ‘Can’t bite the devil on my tongue,’ because sometimes I just say what’s right there, but I’ve learned to kind of attempt” (that), “because words are too powerful.”
As we wait for the arrival of her new album, She Is Miley Cyrus, it seems we’re bound to learn more about their relationship through her music.
