The shoes will be the most expensive piece of Michael Jordan memorabilia to ever be sold, surpassing the $190K paid for his Converse shoes worn in the 1984 Olympic games.

As you can see, the vintage original is in the Chicago Bulls colors (red, black, and white) the style most often wore by MJ on the court.

The back story of the shoes isn't almost as great as the sneakers themselves. In 1984, Nike gave Jordan his first contract giving him a signature line of shoes and apparel. A year later, MJ was given his first pair of Air Jordan's at one of the most important points in his career.

Of course, their popularity skyrocketed!!

In a stunning move, the NBA sent a letter to Nike in February of 1985, telling the company the MJ's colorful shoes were a violation of the leagues 'uniformity of uniform' clause. Who knows what that meant at the time!

So, Nike responded by creating a brilliant ad campaign around the banned shoes and creating a commercial that is even more impressive.

At the time, Nike put out this mind-blowing line, “The NBA threw them out of the game, fortunately, the NBA can’t stop you from wearing them.”

Almost immediately, it become one of the most popular shoes in the world.

How popular you ask?

Nike's first contract with Michael Jordan was $250,000 a year, with the expectation that the shoes and clothing would bring in around $3 million a year by the fourth year of his contract.

Instead, it sold $126 MILLION in the first year and has gotten bigger and bigger every year. Here's the craziest part -- Nike's 'Jordan' brand combined has generated $3.14 BILLION (with a 'B') in revenue in 2019.
