A friend of Mel B and Stephen Belafonte's claims the former Spice Girl repeatedly told him she "would be better off" if Belafonte were dead ... and the guy got the feeling she wanted him to help her do it.

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Derek Craig Daniel filed a declaration as part of the ongoing legal battle between Mel B and Stephen.

Daniel claims he bumped into Mel B on February 28, 2018 at a restaurant in Los Angeles. He says he went up to Mel B to strike a conversation and says she began to tell him "what a terrible person Stephen was."

He explains, "She repeatedly told me that everyone including her would be better off if Stephen was in jail or dead. I specifically recall Melanie repeatedly stating that she would be better off if Stephen were dead."

But Daniel believes he words carried a sinister meaning: "I found the statements to be alarming and it was obvious to me that Melanie was soliciting me to either harm or find someone to help her harm Stephen."

Daniel claims he ran into Stephen only a few weeks ago and relayed the conversation to him.

The filing comes as Stephen is asking the court to order Mel B to fork over a million dollars for legal and accounting fees. He is also seeking an increase is spousal support.
