Lizzo put out a call on social media for others to support the troops after the recent killing of Iran military leader Qasem Soleimani, which was ordered by President Trump.
Lizzo went on Instagram to send her message, including a video of a soldier who was clearly frustrated with people posting memes about WWIII and just generally not supporting actual Americans who are in harm’s way right now.
“My generation gotta tighten up sometime,… a lot of us aren’t really coming back,” he said.
The soldier suggested even a simple message of “good luck” can brighten someone’s day in these tough times.
Lizzo paired the video of the soldier with her message:
“PRAYING AND THANKFUL FOR YOU AND EVERYONE WHO ENLISTED TO SERVE. PRAYING FOR THE CITIZENS OF IRAQ/IRAN WHO WILL BE EFFECTED. Say what you want about the government and the military.. these are human beings, your sisters and brothers and mother and father out there putting their lives on the line. If you made a funny/rude meme or joke, try to balance it out with something kind.”
People sent positive vibes in response to Lizzo’s video.
One person wrote:
“I wish they would just send them back home!. War isn’t ever the answer. How many people have to die because world leaders decide they want to fight another country. It’s so easy to start a war when you’re not the one on the front lines. Like we seriously have to let people fight and die for there to be any sort of solution to our problems?”
People began to argue about the post, and Lizzo wanted to put a stop to that right away, writing in all caps to make her point.
“UPDATE: DO NOT USE THIS POST TO ARGUE WITH EACH OTHER. THERES A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SUPPORTING THE TROOPS AND SUPPORTING A WAR. I WANT THEM HOME SO BADLY BUT UNFORTUNATELY UNTIL WE CAN FIX THE PROBLEMS WITH OUR GOVERNMENT AND SYSTEM, PEOPLE—SOLDIERS AND CIVILIANS—U.S. AND MIDDLE EASTERN—WILL LOSE THEIR LIVES. SO LETS SEND ALL OF THEM SOME LOVE.”
Some people on social media took the opportunity to make a really bad joke about Lizzo and her weight; thankfully, many other people defended her.
“Just saw a really disgusting tweet joking about how we should drop Lizzo over Iran instead of a bomb. Even more disgusting that the tweet had over 100k likes.
Lizzo is beautiful, and everyone who liked that tweet can go fuck themselves. They’re just jealous of her happiness.”
Lizzo decided she’d had enough of things and said she was leaving Twitter for a while — who could blame her?
About 12 hours ago, she wrote: “Yeah I can’t do this Twitter shit no more.. too many trolls… ✌? I’ll be back when I feel like it.”
Lizzo’s just out trying to do good. Earlier she tweeted out contact information for people who want to donate to help those who are suffering in the Australian wildfires.
Yeah I can’t do this Twitter shit no more.. too many trolls… ✌🏾
I’ll be back when I feel like it.
