Lil Nas X Fires Back At Music Producer Accusing Him Of Stealing 'Rodeo'

By Ryan Naumann

Lil Nas X is firing back at claims he ripped off a music producer with his song “Rodeo.”

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Lil Nas X is responding to the lawsuit filed in federal court.

Back in October, music producer Brandon Lee aka Don Lee sued Lil Nas X, Cardi B and Sony Music and Columbia Records accusing them of copyright infringement. Another defendant to the lawsuit is Cardi B’s former manager, Klenord Raphael aka Shaft.

The music producer said he wrote a song called "gwenXdonlee4-142", which was then incorporated into another track named “Broad Day.” The lawsuit said Lil Nas X released his song “Rodeo” with Cardi B after his came out and says it is a total rip off.

The producer claims Lil Nas X ripped off his work without permission or paying him a dime. The suit claims the tempo is the same in both songs along with similar guitar and wind instruments, drumbeats and chord progression.

The suit alleged, “The similarities between the works at issue include but are not limited to the following: the two works at issue employ a number of substantially similar elements and material which constitute a constellation of elements creating a substantially similar overall sound and feel.” The producer is suing for unspecified damages.

In newly filed documents, Lil Nas X denies all allegations of wrongdoing. The rapper says, “The work, Rodeo, was created independently from and without knowledge of the allegedly infringed work.”

Lil Nas X argues, “the musical elements from gwenXdonlee4-142 supposedly used in Rodeo are neither original to Plaintiffs nor copyrightable subject matter.”

The rapper adds, “Without admitting the use of any copyrighted material allegedly owned by Plaintiffs, the conduct of which they complain was impliedly and/or expressly licensed.”

Lil Nas X is asking the court to dismiss all claims against him and award him attorney fees for having to fight the case. Cardi B has yet to respond to the legal battle in court.
