Lady Gaga revealed that she was raped multiple times when she was 19 years old.

"I was raped repeatedly when I was 19 years old, and I also developed PTSD as a result of being raped and also not processing that trauma."

She continued, explaining that she her rapid rise to fame didn't help her symptoms.

"I all of a sudden became a star and was traveling the world going from hotel room to garage to limo to stage, and I never dealt with it, and then all of a sudden I started to experience this incredible intense pain throughout my entire body that mimicked the illness I felt after I was raped."

Gaga also developed fibromyalgia, and dealing with the chronic illness helped her learn more about her mental health as well.

"What's interesting about it is that I've found through neuropsych research and my relationship with my doctors that fibromyalgia can be treated through mental health therapy. And mental health is a medical condition, it should be treated as a medical condition. It should not be ignored."

While talking about mental is slowly losing its stigma, it's still pretty revolutionary to see a someone with Lady Gaga's level of star power being so candid about her own struggles.

"The music I've made for my next pop record is all about opening up your psychotic side. Embracing your own fears so you can become stronger than ever before. So yeah, I'd say it's an empowering album."

After the interview, footage of Oprah and Gaga talking backstage hit Twitter, and Oprah praised the "Shallow" singer for her vulnerability.

"To be the truth that way, nobody does that, and you know that, nobody does that. Nobody does that. And you just did it in front of all those people."
