Imagine the World Without Gaga

Giphy | Mashable

Lady Gaga is an inspiration to those who may be deemed a little bit different. Nearly every time we see the singer out or on the red carpet, she's sporting an original, unique look.

But when Gaga was simply Stefani Germanotta, other kids her age just didn't understand her special qualities.

Gaga's Mom Gets It

Gaga's mom, Cynthia, spoke with CBS News recently about those days.Germanotta said Gaga was often humiliated and taunted.

“Stefani was very unique. And that wasn’t always appreciated by her peers. And as a result, she went through a lot of difficult times. Humiliated, taunted, isolated. When you’re a young woman, this really severely impacts you.”

The Born This Way Foundation Is Doing Good Work

But the two of them worked together in 2012 to create the Born This Way Foundation. Its mission is “to support the mental and emotional wellness of young people by putting their needs, ideas, and voices first.”

According to Gaga, accepting people for who they are is a crucial step to a successful future for so many people who feel misunderstood.

“We are losing a generation of young people who do not believe that their voices are worth hearing. The need in this world for kindness is paralyzing. The negative news and tragedies are nonstop and overwhelming.”

We Need To Actually Listen To Kids

Germanotta says parents should do more than "problem-solve" whatever issues their children are going through.

“I think as parents, our natural instinct is to go into problem-solving mode. When, in fact, you know, they really just want us to take them seriously and understand what they’re saying,” she said.
