Vanessa Bryant delivered a beautiful and emotional speech in which she remembered her husband Kobe and their daughter Gianna during a celebration of life ceremony for them both on Monday.
At one point during the eulogy, she told the story of an extravagant gift Kobe got her for one Valentine’s Day.
“He gifted me the actual notebook and the blue dress Rachel McAdams wore in The Notebook movie. When I asked him why he chose the blue dress [from the movie], he said it was because it’s the scene when Allie comes back to Noah,” Vanessa said during there speech. “We had hoped to grow old together like [in] the movie. We really had an amazing love story.
“We loved each other with our whole beings, two perfectly imperfect people making a beautiful family and raising our sweet and amazing girls,” she added.
The film’s costume designer, Karyn Wagner, spoke to Access about the lengths Bryant went to in order to acquire the dress for his wife.
“When I finish a film, my team and I, we inventory everything, we put it in boxes, and we never see it again, Wagner said. “So I don’t know how Kobe even tracked this dress down. He has to have spent a lot of time and a lot of effort. He was that good and he was that determined to show his wife how much he loved her.”
Wagner previously told The Hollywood Reporter how she reacted to that portion of Vanessa’s speech.
“I started bawling,” Wagner said. “I’m still drying the tears off my face. What a beautiful eulogy. I’m so honored that I was able to contribute in some small way to the history of this amazing man.”
“Vanessa, my whole heart goes out to you for your loss. I am so honored that my art has given you joy. May you heal in kindness and support from your friends and family surrounded warmth and blessings,” Wagner wrote.
Elsewhere in the speech, Vanessa talked about her beautiful daughter, Gianna.
“Gianna Bryant is an amazingly sweet and gentle soul,” Vanessa said. “She was always thoughtful. She always kissed me goodnight and kissed me good morning. There were a few occasions where I was absolutely tired from being up with Bianka and Capri and I thought she had left for school without saying goodbye. I text and say ‘No kiss?’ and Gianna would reply with, ‘Mama, I kissed you but you were asleep and I didn’t want to wake you.’
“She knew how much her morning and evening kisses meant to me. She was so thoughtful to remember to kiss me every day,” she continued. “She was Daddy’s girl but I know she loved her mama. She would always tell me and show me how much she loved me. She was one of my very best friends. She loved faith, she loved putting a smile on everyone’s faces.”
