Kenan Thompson, who's been providing laughs on "Saturday Night Live" for the past 17 years, is expected to bring some levity to this year's White House Correspondents' Association dinner. Thompson is scheduled to give the main speech at the annual dinner, while previous host Hasan Minhaj will be the "featured entertainer."

This should be fun: When Minhaj performed at the 2017 dinner, which was just a few months after Trump's inauguration, he called the president the "liar in chief" and said he "can't take a joke."

The dinner will be Saturday, April 25.

White House Correspondents’ Association president and ABC News’ chief White House correspondent Jonathan Karl released a statement about the choice of speakers.

“Kenan and Hasan are two of the most engaged and engaging entertainers in America. I’m thrilled they’ll help us celebrate the role of a free press in our democracy. We’re looking forward to a lively evening honoring the most important political journalism of the past year.”

Back To Normal

According to Entertainment Weekly, the event this year will feature three new awards: the Collier Prize for State Government Accountability, the Award for Excellence in Presidential News Coverage by Visual Journalists, and the Katharine Graham Award for Courage and Accountability.

Choosing Thompson was the organization's return to past precedent, since comedians often hosted the dinner. But after comedian Michelle Wolf's performance in 2018, when she lambasted former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. President Trump was none too pleased with that.

Last year, the association chose Ron Chernow, a presidential biographer, to deliver the featured speech.

Veteran Comedian

Thompson has been with SNL since 2003, and holds the record for being a cast member the longest.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Thompson also holds the record for performing the most celebrity impressions on the show.

Among the characters he's portrayed on the show, he's done Greedy Smurf, Suge Knight, Steve Harvey and Reba McEntire.

Time Will Tell

People on social media were initially worried when they saw Thompson trending -- relax, he's just hosting an important dinner.

"Who saw Kenan Thompson and immediately thought he was dead? I'm like every time I see a name trend #TuesdayThoughts," wrote Mediocre_Spidey.

Some thought having Thompson as host wouldn't change much after Wolf's performance.

"They will throw softballs I bet the WHCA will edit their material @michelleisawolf raised the bar too high," said @Notverycon.

"I thought agent orange cancelled the correspondents dinner @michelleisawolf PLEASE host again!" said @kimberly5098.
