Katy Perry Feared Backlash If She Defended Dr. Luke in Kesha Battle: 'I Would Be the One Woman That Is Against Women'

Katy Perry was worried her career would be ruined by fans of Kesha supporters if she publicly supported or continued working with Dr. Luke, and she did not want to be the "one woman that is against women."

On November 29, court documents were filed in the never-ending Kesha and Dr. Luke legal battle and Katy Perry’s entire testimony was finally revealed.

Perry's deposition went down back on July 21, 2017 and she was questioned by Dr. Luke’s attorneys. Certain portions of the transcript have already been released in the past couple of months, which showed Katy on the record saying Luke never raped her.

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Perry was questioned about her decision to cease working with Luke after Kesha's allegations became public. Perry explains she was aware at the time that certain celebrities were publicly supporting Kesha following her filing suit against Luke and accusing him of sexual assault (which he has denied).

The pop star says she was pressured to come out and support Kesha, saying, “I felt pressured, but I also knew both of them and a lot of people did not. So it was easy for them to be disattached and support an idea rather than an actual instance."

She described being pressured by fans on Twitter and says, “People were generally very angry at me for not saying anything.”

Katy Perry said Luke became toxic in the industry saying, “The association with working with Luke was a negative at the time and still is because of this incident.”

When pressed on if that was because of Kesha’s allegations and the press support behind her, Perry replied, “Yes."

The singer also takes issue with both Kesha and Lady Gaga texting each other about her. Perry says Gaga and Kesha believed she had been raped by Dr. Luke and was hiding something. She said she was “annoyed, pissed off that she would bring me into it in this way, annoyed at both Luke and Kesha.”

She felt that Luke was dragging her into it to use her testimony that he didn’t rape her. She explains, “And I want to stay out of it because I know them both and I empathize with both of them and obviously it’s a horrible situation for both of them. And the only two people that know what really went on are those two people."

Perry was questioned about not having Dr. Luke work on her album, "Witness," and says she spoke to him beforehand about the decision. She told Luke it would not be well received if she did because of Kesha’s lawsuit and said that it would appear she was "picking a side."

"They think I was raped and I was not," Perry said.

She points out she never defended Luke in the press because she feared she would be further criticized and attacked.

Perry explains, “Just that I would be attacked, I would be the one woman that is against women and I’m not against women, but I believe in innocent until proven guilty and I believe in justice.”

The "Roar" singer said she feared if she did work with Luke, it would affect her music sales and a protest and smear campaign would be launched against her.

Luke has argued in the legal battle that Kesha’s allegations against him cost him upwards of $50 million, with a majority of the loss coming from not producing Katy’s future albums.

Dr. Luke's defamation case against Kesha remains ongoing.
