Jussie Smollett is slowly making his way back into the spotlight after taking a much-needed hiatus following a rough year. The 37-year-old controversial actor reappeared on social media to belt out an incredible rendition of “What’s Going On” on what would have been Marvin Gaye‘s 81st birthday. Taking to Instagram on Thursday, Jussie Smollett came out of his self-proclaimed quarantine day 420+ to shock fans and remind everyone he’s got serious talent when it comes to the singing department.
Wearing a white and blue bandana around his head, the former “Empire” actor sported a dark-colored sweatshirt and went right into the song. Pressing play on his iPhone, Jussie Smollett recorded his intimate at-home studio session before sharing it with the world. “Happy birthday King Marvin…,” he captioned the video. “We need more love, don’t you think?” Considering the current climate, Marvin Gaye’s song really hits home and Jussie Smollett couldn’t have picked a better hit to pay tribute to the legendary singer, who died at the hands of his father nearly four decades ago.
His Instagram followers were impressed with Jussie Smollett’s chops and immediately took to his video thanking him for sharing his talent. “Hey love, so happy to see you back posting. You were missed. We all love and value you,” one person wrote. “Yes I miss hearing your voice. Beautiful spirit. Keep it up,” added another. “Ur voice is beautiful. I almost forgot. Thank u for posting this,” commented a third. “I needed this. Miss ya King Marv. Thank you Jussie,” responded someone else.
Jussie Smollett recently returned to social media to declare that while nearly the entire United States is on some sort of lockdown, he’s been in quarantine for over 400 years. Using the piano and his vocals as a buffer, the actor leveled with fans. “Quarantine day 421… Hope y’all are staying safe. Spread love and kindness… not Rona. Bro @davidmichaelott on ? (I swear Imma learn this before I walk outside) ????.”
That post was Jussie Smollet’s first since June 2019. Last month, the star plead not guilty for the second time to new charges stemming from allegations he lied to Chicago police about being the victim to a hate crime over a year ago. At the time, Jussie Smollett told authorities he was attacked near his apartment by two masked men. He claimed they beat him, screamed racial and homophobic slurs at him, and even put a noose around his neck. Police later accused the actor of hiring two friends to stage the incident.
