Kanye West and John Legend have been friends and collaborators for years, but it seems like the two performers have grown apart in recent years. In the wake of Kanye’s incredibly erratic presidential campaign and his support of Donald Trump, Legend has distanced himself. He told the UK Sunday Times that he and West have just grown apart over the years.
“I don’t think we’re less friends because of the Trump thing. I just think we’re doing our own thing. He’s up in Wyoming. I’m here in L.A. We’ve both got growing families and I no longer have a formal business relationship with him as an artist, so I think it’s just part of the natural cycle of life.”
Legend explained that he and West “never talked about politics before” and that that wasn’t a part of their friendship.
“Our interaction was almost always about creativity and music. He’s also in a different place musically. He’s doing gospel music. That’s what he’s focused on right now, designing his clothes, so we’re in different places.”
However, Legend did famously text West after the rapper expressed his public support for Donald Trump back in 2018. Legend wrote at the time:
“Hey it’s JL. I hope you’ll reconsider aligning yourself with Trump. You’re way too powerful and influential to endorse who he is and what he stands for. As you know, what you say really means something to your fans. They are loyal to you and respect your opinion.”
“So many people who love you feel so betrayed right now because they know the harm that Trump’s policies cause, especially to people of color. Don’t let this be part of your legacy. You’re the greatest artist of our generation.”
West replied, “I love you John and I appreciate your thoughts. You bringing up my fans or my legacy is a tactic based on fear used to manipulate my free thought.”
Now that West has gone from privately talking politics with West to advocating against him, sharing a link on Twitter that West was basically being used by the Trump administration to sabotage Joe Biden’s campaign.
Anyway…. Anyone reckless and/or misinformed enough to fall for the okey doke probably wasn't voting for Biden (or voting at all).

“Just in case anyone needs some clarity around what’s happening here.”
He continued with a second tweet, pointing out that West was running a campaign based on ignorance.
“Anyway…. Anyone reckless and/or misinformed enough to fall for the okey doke probably wasn’t voting for Biden (or voting at all).”
When asked whether or not he was trying to hinder former Vice President Joe Biden’s bid for the White House in an interview with Forbes, West replied “I’m not denying it; I just told you.”
