Jessica Simpson is on the promotional trail for her new memoir, Open Book, and she's getting super vulnerable. In the book, she opened up about her past relationships, her career struggles, and her battle with alcoholism

In a new interview with Hoda Kobt on Wednesday's episode of Today, Simpson expounded on those struggles with addiction and admitted that her alcohol use was truly out of control.

"I had started a spiral and I couldn’t catch up with myself…and that was with alcohol. Every day I would say it, 'I’ll stop soon. I’ll cut back.'"

Simpson explained that moderation is a difficult thing for her, that she tended to be an all or nothing person in all aspects of life.

"I would say it openly to everyone. ‘I know. I know, I’ll stop soon. I’ll cut back.’ For me to cut back, like I’m an all or nothing girl, and so I didn’t know it was a problem until it was."

It got to the point that she was constantly drinking and always had a full cup with her.

"I completely didn’t recognize myself. I always had a glitter cup. It was always filled to the rim with alcohol. I just realized that I had to surrender. It was time. I had to give it up and I was ready. I’m not going to miss another day."

Simpson details the battle with addiction more in her book, where she explained that she got sober in 2017 after she "zoned out" at her kids' Halloween party and that she was "killing myself with all the drinking and the pills."

"I need to stop. Something’s got to stop. And if it’s alcohol that’s doing this and making things worse, then I quit. Giving up the alcohol was easy. I was mad at that bottle. At how it allowed me to stay complacent and numb."

Simpson explained that her husband, Eric Johnson, helped her get sober by giving up alcohol himself.

"It was like no biggie [for him to give up booze for good with her] and he hasn't gone back or looked back. 'It's just the way he is. He's a very selfless and loving person who is the most incredible father on the planet."

Simpson and Johnson have been married since 2014 and have three kids together.
