Jennifer Lopez and Shakira put on one of the greatest Super Bowl halftime shows in recent memory, celebrating their latino heritage, the power of women, and that being awesome doesn’t have an age limit. Lopez even brought out her daughter to have her own empowering musical moment.
At the press conference ahead of the show, Lopez explained that they were hoping to pack in as many different things as possible into the show.
“It’s a lot of energy. It’s very entertaining. There’s heartfelt moments. I think we run the gamut. It’s packed with a lot of awesome moments.”
She continued, explaining that she wanted to commemorate the monumental moment of two Latina women headlining the massive show together.
“Two Latinas, doing this in this country at this time, it’s just very empowering for us. And for me, I’m very proud to be able to help and put forth that message.”
The show was widely well received, but of course there were some who thought the show was too sexual. Conservatives mothers on social media were the driving voices in the backlash against the show.
While on the blue carpet for the Independent Spirit Awards, Lopez was asked for her reaction to the critical response that her show with Shakira was “too sexy,” and she explained that it was “honestly silliness.”
“Both of us are really respectful performers who are moms, who have kids, who are very conscious of what we do.We did a show that I believe was a celebration of women and our Latino culture that was really well received.”
Do you hear that, haters? JLo is unbothered.

She continued, explaining that she thought they communicated their message well.
“And that small faction of people who want to be negative about it, it’s not something I can even let in because it was such an amazing night, and so many beautiful things came out of it.
The message of standing up for yourself, being a woman – that’s what I want to pass on to little girls. You’re strong, you’re beautiful — everything about you, be proud of it. I’m very proud of the performance that night.”
Something tells me that people will not remember the moms who hated the performance, but the incredible show itself.
