Jennifer Lopez has been slapped with a federal lawsuit by a photo agency.
According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Splash News and Picture Agency is suing J.Lo.
The suit explains, “This is an action for copyright infringement brought by plaintiff, the holder of the copyright to the photograph described below, against defendant for use of plaintiff’s photograph without authorization or permission.”
Splash says they own the copyright to a photo “depicting Lopez holding hands with her then-boyfriend and now-husband Alex Rodriguez while out for breakfast in New York City.”
The suit explains, “Plaintiff never licensed the Photograph to defendant. Nevertheless, Lopez used it without authorization or permission from plaintiff to do so.”
Splash says, “Specifically, Lopez or someone acting on her behalf copied the Photograph and distributed it on Instagram, via the @jlo account, on a story posted November 7, 2017.”
They continue, “Lopez has over 93 million Instagram followers, and her Instagram account is open to the public.” The agency claims they fired off a legal letter to Lopez in December 2017.
The suit adds, “But defendant’s unauthorized use harms the existing and future market for the original Photograph. The Instagram post made the Photograph immediately available to Lopez’s tens of millions followers and others, consumers of entertainment news—and especially news and images of Lopez herself, as evidenced by their status as followers of her—who would otherwise be interested in viewing licensed versions of the Photograph in the magazines and newspapers that are plaintiff’s customers.”
They are suing for in excess of $150,000 and an injunction against Lopez from using their work.
Lopez isn’t the only one dealing with paparazzi legal battles. Gigi Hadid was sued recently over a photo of her ex and Victoria Beckham saw one be dismissed.
