Jennifer Lopez is set to play a Colombian drug lord in the upcoming movie The Godmother” which she also plans to produce.
Lopez will play Griselda Blanco, a real-life drug lord who was murdered in 2012. Blanco grew up poor in Colombia, but rose to infamy as a drug lord, beating out other men in the process. She also played a big role in the Cocaine Cowboy Wars. It was reported that she was worth about $2 billion at the time of her death.
Lopez spoke of her desire to play Blanco:
“I’ve been forever fascinated by the story of Griselda Blanco and jumped at the chance to play her on screen.
“She is all things we look for in storytelling and dynamic characters – notorious, ambitious, conniving, chilling.”
Variety says J Lo may consider directing the movie as well.
Regina Corrado, of Deadwood: The Movie, and Terence Winter (The Wolf Of Wall Street, Boardwalk Empire, and The Sopranos) wrote the screenplay. Their credentials could give the movie an extra boost.
