It's the Rock and Martin Show

Actors and comedians Chris Rock and Steve Martin kicked off this year's Academy Awards show with a brief dual standup set to get the crowd warmed up.

One subject of conversation was Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon.

Rock and Martin first started off their monologue by noting that they were both previous hosts of the awards show, and added that their new role was "such an incredible demotion.”

Okay, not bad.

Then, after acknowledging Bezos' presence in the crowd, they proceeded to act like they didn't know who he was.

“Wow, great actor!” Martin said to laughs.

Rock built on that, citing Bezos' massive wealth.

“He’s got cash. When he writes a check, the bank bounce. Jeff Bezos is so rich, he got divorced and he’s still the richest man in the world. He saw ‘Marriage Story’ and thought it was a comedy.”

They also remarked on the #OscarsSoWhite controversy that bubbles up every awards season.

"Think how much the Oscars have changed in the past 92 years...back in 1929, there were no black acting nominees," noted Martin.

"And now in 2020, we got one," added Rock.

Every Year We Ask For Tina

But others questioned why other SNL alumni weren't hosting the awards instead of Rock and Martin (despite the fact that they no longer have hosts for the Academy Awards.)

"Tina Fey, Kate McKinnon, neither of which has hosted - yet you put on these 2 tired acts?" asked @backroads_linda.

Other viewers also thought the duo was just so-so.

"They were meh till the last “joke” about the joker CRINGE," said @WeepingUnicornQ.

Others on social media continued the Bezos pile-on.

"oh my god. bong joon ho and the entire cast of parasite just ran up to jeff bezos and started beating the shit out of him. oh god the cameras aren’t even cutting away it’s just brutal," joked @lgbtkenobi.

@ayoedebiri noted: "Still thinking about the Oscars cutting to sandra oh during the parasite win.....why not cut to Jeff Bezos who is rich and horrible and who could (not saying should, but) be murdered."

As far as social media was concerned, Bezos' net worth, as well as Bezos, was fair game, according to author and economist Robert Reich:

"Remember when Whole Foods announced it would be cutting medical benefits for its entire part-time workforce? Amazon's annual savings from this cost-cutting ploy is what Jeff Bezos — whose net worth is $110 billion — makes in two hours.

Tax the rich."

"I'm fine with a three-hour roast of Jeff Bezos," said @ditzkoff.
