Earlier in the episode, Van Der Beek announced the news of his wife’s miscarriage in a video, saying that it was a parent’s “worst nightmare.”
“My wife Kimberly and I went through every expecting parent’s worst nightmare. We lost the baby,” he said.
Just about a month ago, the couple announced they were pregnant. Van Der Beek acknowledged then that life is fleeting.
“Hearing the heartbeat was something we never take for granted,” he said.
Van Der Beek also talked about how the miscarriage may affect their family.
“You never know why these things happen, that’s what I’ve been telling my kids. All you know is that it brings you closer together, it breaks you open, it opens your heart, it deepens your appreciation. It makes you more human.”
Less than 24 hours ago, Van Der Beek posted a picture of his wife and daughter on Instagram as he expressed his sadness and devastation about the news of their miscarriage:
“Wrecked. Devastated. In shock. That’s how we’re feeling right now after the soul we thought were going to welcome into our family in April… has taken a short cut to whatever lies beyond this life.”
Van Der Beek made reference to the fact that they’ve suffered other miscarriages in the past.
“We’ve been through this before, but never this late in the pregnancy, and never accompanied by such a scary, horrific threat to @vanderkimberly and her well-being. Grateful that she’s now recovering, but we’ve only just begun unpacking the layers of this one.”
Van Der Beek went on to thank his friends and colleagues, including those at “Dancing With the Stars,” for their support.
“Thank you to all of our friends and co-workers (and dance partners) who have shown up for us so beautifully during this time. As many of you have said, ‘There are no words…’ and it’s true. Which is why in a time like this it’s enough to know that you’re there. Grieving AND counting our blessings today.”
The decision to cut Van Der Beek from the show was tough for the DWTS judges.
“This is not easy. First of all, this is not at all what I expected to see here,” said judge Carrie Inaba.
Host Tom Bergeron said this elimination was the “hardest judge’s verdict so far this season.”
In a touching gesture, singer Ally Brooke offered her spot to Van Der Beek after his elimination.
“Can I give it to James?” Brooke asked.
