Idris Elba is opening up about people who feel James Bond shouldn’t be played by a black man, and reveals he would take the role if offered.

Elba sat down with Vanity Fair, where he discussed everything from his new wife, Sabrina Dhowre, his career and his future ambitions.

Towards the end of the interview the topic of him becoming James Bond. Elba admits it’s not his favorite thing to discuss with people.

He says he would love to play Bond, but reveals nobody has ever officially offered him the iconic role.

Elba added, "Of course, if someone said to me ‘Do you want to play James Bond?,’ I’d be like, Yeah! That’s fascinating to me. But it’s not something I’ve expressed, like, Yeah, I wanna be the black James Bond."

He talks about the haters who try and argue Bond can’t be black. Elba got honest by saying, “You just get disheartened, when you get people from a generational point of view going, ‘It can’t be.’ And it really turns out to be the color of my skin. And then if I get it and it didn’t work, or it did work, would it be because of the color of my skin? That’s a difficult position to put myself into when I don’t need to."

Craig’s first appearance as Bond came in 2006’s “Casino Royale,” followed by 2008’s “Quantum of Solace”, 2012’s “Skyfall” and 2015’s “Spectre.” Craig has expressed on-again off-again disinterest in continuing to play the role.

In 2015, he was quoted as saying he would rather slit his wrists than play Bond again. He would later clarify his comments and go on to sign on for another round.

The Elba as Bond rumors have been around for quite a while but were given new life when a report claimed Bond producer Barbara Broccoli once told director Antoine Fuqua it was time for a non-white actor to play the iconic role.

Fuqua allegedly suggested Elba, but a rep for the "Training Day" director came out and said the conversation never happened.
